Honorees at this year’s Gala will include the recipients of the Harlem Spotlight Award and Founder’s Award. The alumni roast of SBI Founder, Charles Thompson will be part of a 30-minute live stream gala segment Founder on the occasion of his 76th birthday; a 30-minute live-stream part of the evening being viewed by 300 alumni sponsors and their friends.
Our Mission
Sound Business, Inc. (SBI) fosters systemic socio-economic change through grassroots initiatives which educate, organize and mobilize. Over its three-decade residency in Harlem’s A. Philip Randolph Campus High School, SBI has positively impacted the trajectories of thousands of its students from socio-economically disadvantaged communities throughout New York City. SBI strives to be an incubator of youth empowerment, community building, and social change by providing transformative educational experiences. Its innovative Inclusive Grassroots Cooperative (IGC) framework, is a model for redefining the public’s role in public schools.

Harlem Spotlight Award

KRS-One
Rapper | Pioneer | Activist | Philosopher | Educator
KRS-One (Lawrence Parker) is a legendary rapper, activist, philosopher, educator, and hip-hop pioneer. Known as The Teacha, he emerged in the 1980s as a founding force of socially conscious hip-hop, blending sharp lyricism with messages of empowerment, justice, and community uplift. As co-founder of Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One helped shape hip-hop’s golden era, using his platform to address issues of poverty, violence, and racial inequality. Beyond music, he established himself as a cultural icon and intellectual voice, founding the Stop the Violence Movement and delivering lectures at universities, schools, and cultural institutions around the world. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to using hip-hop not only as an art form, but as a tool for education, transformation, and social progress.. His “edutainment” philosophy has inspired generations of young Black and Brown communities to embrace knowledge, pride, and empowerment through the arts. His legacy mirrors Sound Business Inc.’s mission to nurture talent and opportunity in Harlem. The Harlem Spotlight Award honors KRS-One’s enduring influence as an artist, educator, and activist whose workcontinues to uplift communities from Harlem to the world.

David Fanning
Educator | Principal of A. Philip Randolph Campus High School
David Fanning has served as the 10th Principal of A. Philip Randolph Campus High School since 2011—marking nearly 14 years of committed leadership—during which he has steadfastly upheld the school’s mission of academic rigor and equitable opportunity in Harlem. Under his guidance, Randolph has become a beacon ofcollege readiness, with the majority of graduates earning admission to top institutions, supported by transformative programs like the SBI-affiliated College and Career Preparatory Institute. A 2016 member of the prestigious Cahn Fellows cohort, Principal Fanning has demonstrated visionary leadership in instructional innovationand community-building. In recognition of his dedication to student success, institutional excellence, and partnership with Sound Business, Inc.—we arehonored to present him with the Charles Thompson Founders Award.
