Randolph Timeline

In the fall of 1979, the City College Campus High School (what would later become A. Philip Randolph Campus High School) opened in Goethals Hall, at The City College of New York campus, with one hundred ninth graders. The beginning of this now 45-year journey was challenging, but highly motivated students and dedicated educators overcame those difficulties. One of the high school’s first principals was the legendary Dr. Lottie Taylor, and under her leadership, A. Philip Randolph Campus High School was named a 1986–87 Excellence in Education Award recipient by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The Golden Era

In January 1999, U.S. News & World Report identified A. Philip Randolph Campus High School as one of nine New York City public high schools rated as outstanding among over a thousand schools. Rudolph F. Crew, the Chancellor of New York City public schools at the time, wrote, “As a school with a challenging core curriculum, strong academic standards and expectations, high student attendance rates, [and] highly qualified teachers… A. Philip Randolph High School exemplifies what every school in this city can and should be.”

Randolph HS Day

On March 18, 2005, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed “Randolph High School Day” in honor of the school’s 25th anniversary. The school’s reputation had grown steadily, earning public recognition from the United States Department of Education, the College Board, and U.S. News & World Report magazine. New initiatives, implemented jointly by the high school, The City College of New York, and the Department of Education, aim to ensure that Randolph’s rich legacy remains secure.
