"My experience has been revelatory. The students have consistently shown a deep desire to share their innermost feelings along with a strong commitment and openness to improving their writing.
Through the beautiful art of poetry the audience will gain insight into what the youth in their community are feeling, hoping for and struggling with. Hopefully the audience will feel both affirmed and celebrated."
- Workshop Creator & Director, Alicia Thompson
About the workshop series:
The Renaissance Now Workshop Intensive introduces participants to creative writing as a form of self-expression and a tool of empowerment; closely supports building literacy and provides participants with the tools and techniques of written/performance poetry. This workshop requires participants to critically examine social justice issues and to consider the role poets play in transforming community. This workshop supports participants in editing and revising original writing and facilitates a supportive environment. Themes may include but are not limited to: reclaiming narrative, exploring the cultural histories of Harlem and the surrounding area, art as a tool of resistance and liberation, as well as connecting it to todays youth culture. Instruction will complement school’s 2020-2021 unit theme and focus.
Renaissance Now is an interactive writing intensive designed to connect participants to the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance. It is an invitation to explore the history woven into the streets, institutions, and corners that they occupy every day. Armed with the knowledge of the past, participants will be primed to address the beauty and struggles percolating in their communities. They will explore what they love, fear, detest and hope for. They will explore their imagination, what inspires them and what legacy they want to leave. It is the goal of this intensive to impart to the participants that they, like the artists of the Renaissance, have the power of their voice to transform themselves and their community.
These 2021 Harlem Renaissance Now Interactive Writing Workshops and the March 24, 2021 culminating event were made possible by a grant from the West Harlem Development Corporation. A special thanks to Harlem Stage, Sound Business, Inc.'s community partner, who introduced us to Alicia Thompson.
